Wine Advocate - Robert Parker # 188, Apr 2010 - Jay Miller
The 2006 Juan Rojo is 100% Tempranillo from 80+-year-old vines aged for 8 months in French oak. It delivers a superb bouquet of lightly roasted herbs, espresso, lavender, incense, black cherry, blackberry, and dark chocolate. This leads to a rich, succulent, seamless wine that manages to conceal enough structure for another 2-3 years of evolution.

Wine Advocate # 183, Jun 2009 - Jay Miller
The dark ruby-colored 2005 Juan Rojo spent eight months in French oak. It gives up attractive aromas of cedar, spice box, black cherry, and black raspberry. Ripe, spicy, and intensely flavored, this rich effort will evolve for another 3-4 years and drink well through 2020. It is an excellent value.
Both Bodegas Matarredonda wines are sourced from old vine Tempranillo.

Matarredonda Juan Rojo Tinto 2003
Wine Advocate # 169, Feb 2007 - Jay Miller
Bodegas Matarredonda, whose first vintage was 2001, is off to a quick start. As is typical in the D.O. of Toro, these wines are 100% Tinta de Toro, the local clone of Tempranillo. The 2003 Juan Rojo was aged for 8 months in French and American oak. Purple-colored, it has a slightly baked character in the nose, a characteristic of this hot vintage. On the palate, this meaty, beefy wine is surprisingly supple-textured and nearly elegant. There is plentiful ripe fruit, good integration of wood, tannin, and acidity, and enough structure for 2-4 years of further evolution. This Toro offers very good value.
